Erdogan: Spirit of fascism rampant in Europe
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accuses Europe of being tainted by fascism as tensions between Ankara and several European states continue to rise.
Erdogan made the comments during a televised speech in the Turkish city of Afyon-kara-hisar. The Turkish cabinet has already discussed a broad package of sanctions against the Netherlands. Tensions have been running high between Turkey and the European Union after Germany and the Netherlands banned planned rallies by Turkish ministers, citing public security concerns. The rallies were part of Erdogan’s campaign for an April referendum on expanding his powers. The Turkish president has denounced the cancellations, accusing Berlin and Amsterdam of behaving like “Nazis”. EU chiefs have blasted his comments as “detached from reality”.
