Meeting Your Partners Parents For The First Time? Here Are Tips That Would Help You

The holidays are here again and most people see this opportunity as a time for their partner to visit their parents to get to know each other better. Spending time with your significant other’s family during the holidays can be stressful, especially if you’re meeting them for the very first time.

Before introducing your partner to your family, it is recommended you wait for about three months from when you first started just to make sure the relationship has a good footing.

Here are some tips that can help you.

Do not go empty handed.

Never go empty handed on your first visit, it is not only to show a gesture of that first time meeting, but it's also showing gratitude for the invitation. You can send gifts before you go or take one along on your visit. Note that you should be careful with gifting them alcoholic drink because they might be non-drinkers.

Dress Appropriately.

During holiday get-togethers, some families sport formal wear, while others opt for casual. It’s always a good idea to confirm dress-code expectations with your partner so as not to appear overly dressed or poorly dressed for your visit.

Address Them Appropriately.

Like it or not, they might be your in-laws in the future, so it's appropriate you address them appropriately. Show some respect to the parents and the siblings in the family. These are what families look out for whenever a guest who might become family is first brought home.

Remain Focused.

While speaking with family members, be truly present when someone is talking and allow yourself a moment to respond genuinely. It’s important to make eye contact, and put away your phone, if you are able because it makes people like you more when you are a good listener.

Stay Upbeat.

You’ll want to avoid discussing politics, religion and controversial subjects. Instead, talk about where you’re from, shared interests, hobbies and sports, and ask them questions, too. Also, avoid being critical.

Lend a Helping Hand.

You can be a team player by kindly offering to assist with chores such as setting the table or clearing it after a meal. It could come off as lazy if you’re sitting there watching a host and hostess run around, and looking expectant to be served. If your host says no, then its okay if you sit back and let them serve you.

Drink in limit.

Try to limit your alcohol consumption to one or two glasses of wine to keep your composure. You dont want to give them reasons not to like you. Do not get tipsy as it wont speak well of you.
